All Natural Applesauce
Ingredients:
8 *Apples, cored, peeled, and largely chopped
1/2 cup Apple juice or water (about enough to cover bottom of pan with 1″ of liquid)
3 T. of brown sugar, depending on sweetness of fruit
2 T. of Lemon juice from about half a lemon
Dash of salt
½ t. ground cinnamon
Makes about 4 cups
*There are a great deal of apple varieties grown today. Some better for eating, while others, usually the softer less crisp apples tend to be better for making apple sauce such as Golden Delicions, Gravenstein, Granny Smith, Fuji, and Mcintosh. Refer to this very helpful Apple Country Usage Chart at www.nyapplecountry.com/appleusage.htm to learn the best use for each variety.
Get adventurous and try using more than one variety of apple in your sauce- have our kids help select the apples they want to eat for dinner.
Lets Cook:
In a medium sauce pan, simmer readied apples, juice, sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Cook for 20 minutes or until apples begin to soften all the way through with a fork.
Remove from heat, add lemon and with a potato masher, blend apples until they reach desired consistency. I prefer chunky applesauce, but just keep mashing if you like it smooth. Serve warm with any favorite family dish. Enjoy!
